SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Two of the seven people arrested after a fight at the Block Island Ferry terminal were in court Monday.

Police allege 36-year-old Michael Lopes and his brother, 32-year-old Henry Lopes Jr., were both involved in the incident Saturday night in Narragansett. Police said officers arrived around 8:15 p.m. to find 20 to 30 people fighting in the passenger-loading area.

Lt. Ryan Prest, who read the facts of the case in court, said that when police tried to break up the fight, some of the people involved began assaulting the officers and trying to prevent them from making arrests.

One of those people, according to Prest, was Michael Lopes, who had to be taken to the ground by police. He's charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

His lawyer, however, insisted in court that his client only got involved to protect his sister.

"He didn't just go up and start a fight for no reason, judge. His sister was assaulted and he went to defend his sister," Michael Lopes' attorney said.

Michael Lopes, of Brockton, was ordered held as a bail violator, which is related to a recent DUI case. His lawyer said his first court appearance in the DUI case is scheduled for this coming Friday, and the judge scheduled a status conference in the Narragansett case for June 26.

Meanwhile, Henry Lopes Jr., of Providence, is charged only with disorderly conduct. His bail was set at $1,000 with surety, but the judge sent him across the hall for a Superior Court violation.
