NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) -- A lifeguard training class at Narragansett Town Beach took place on Saturday.
During this training, lifeguards went through crucial standard procedures for watching over the beach. Participants were also introduced to new techniques.
"This is our first year doing soft, torps and fins for rescues," Mike Florio, waterfront director at Narragansett Town Beach, told 12 News. "We're one of the last states in the country to get rid of the torps and reels. So that's kind of been a change for the kids to learn and adapt to."
The Narragansett Town Beach is temporarily open throughout Memorial Day weekend. On Monday, that beach will be closed again but will be back open full-time starting June 1.
