NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Rabbit Island, which used to belong to Rhode Island founder Roger Williams, is now owned by an East Greenwich couple, 12 News has learned.

The small historic island, located off the coast of North Kingstown, was listed for sale earlier this year for nearly $900,000.

But town tax records indicate that Daniel and Caitlin Marusak purchased the nine-acre island back in August for $416,000 after the appraisal came in at approximately $338,500.

Rabbit Island was gifted to Roger Williams in 1638 by Queen Sachem of the Narragansett Indian Tribe, according to the former online listing. Queen Sachem offered him the land after he was banished from Massachusetts for his beliefs.

"She gave it to him to raise his goats, as they were causing havoc in her mainland gardens," the listing noted.

Williams sold the 8.39-acre island, which is situated in Wickford Harbor, and his trading post to Richard Smith in 1651. (Smith's homestead still stands in North Kingstown and is considered one of the oldest houses in the state.)

“Since then, the property has remained relatively undisturbed,” the listing explained.

Rabbit Island consists of a central plateau that’s "surrounded by a gently sloping tidal flat that supports salt marshes in sheltered sections and beaches where it faces wind and waves," according to the listing.

The central plateau boasts a "cathedral like forest" that consists of red oak, gray birch, wild black cherry and sassafras trees. No houses or structures have been built on the island.

“Property like this only comes up for sale once in a lifetime, or maybe never,” the listing concluded.

12 News has reached out to Daniel Marusak to learn more about their plans for the island but have not yet heard back.
