RICHMOND, R.I. (WPRI) — The Richmond Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its officers.

Sergeant Michael Lawing passed away Sunday at Yale New Haven Hospital "after a difficult battle with a sudden illness," the police department wrote in a social media post.

Lawing, a 23-year veteran of the force, also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He launched Richmond's first-ever K-9 program in 2018 after securing the funding to do so, and was also "instrumental" in implementing the body-worn camera program over the past two years, the police department added.

Lawing was a volunteer firefighter for the Richmond-Carolina Fire Department, where he previously held the rank of lieutenant.

"He was truly one of the most talented police officers we’ve had the pleasure of working with," the police department wrote. "Intelligent, capable and witty, he could always make you laugh when you needed it most."

"Our heartfelt sympathy and support are with his wife, children, parents, and family at this time," the post continued. "We thank everyone for their condolences, and respectfully ask that you keep Sergeant Lawing's family in your thoughts and prayers."

Town Pizza 2 will be hosting a fundraiser on Tuesday between 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant will be donating 100% of the proceeds to his Lawing's family.

The fundraiser was initially organized the day prior to Lawing's passing to offset his medical expenses.

Town Pizza 2 general manager Charlotte Currie told 12 News Lawing was one of their regular customers.

"He was just always happy," Currie said. "He would come in and always have a big smile on his face ... the staff always loved him."

"It was just a joy to see him walk in the building," she continued.

Lawing leaves behind his wife and 6-year-old son. A GoFundMe page set up to support Lawing and his family has already raised more than $26,000.

His services have not yet been announced.
