NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — North Kingstown detectives are investigating after four stores were broken into early Monday morning in the area of Post Road.
Police said they were called to the Five Below on Gate Road around 2:50 a.m. for a reported breaking and entering. Officers arrived to find the front window smashed and cash register missing.
A witness told police the suspect or suspects fled in a black SUV.
A short time later, the vehicle was found abandoned after it crashed into the Amtrak station on Ten Rod Road. The building was unoccupied, according to police, but the SUV hit an electrical guidewire and knocked out power to the area.
Rhode Island State troopers who responded to help with the search found a man in the area of the crash. Police said he refused to identify himself and answer questions.
The suspect was taken into custody on an obstruction charge.
Police said they found four businesses that were broken into early Monday morning:
- Five Below (86 Gate Road)
- Yorktown Market (6769 Post Road)
- Smoxy Smoke Shop (6172 Post Road)
- Kingstown Mobile Gas Station (6228 Post Road)
