WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — A man died Thursday after a large wave crashed over him at Weekapaug Inn Beach, according to Westerly police.
Chief Paul Gingerella said the 71-year-old was wading in shallow water when he was hit and injured by the wave around 2:40 p.m.
The man's wife told police he had been out body surfing at the time.
When police arrived, a lifeguard and first responders were performing CPR, but the man did not survive.
It is not considered a drowning at this time. Gingerella said they're waiting on an autopsy to determine the exact cause of the man's death.
