NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — About three years ago, Sarah Horgan woke up at 5 a.m. to a devastating phone call: "AdCare's on fire."
Horgan, the executive director of AdCare Rhode Island, arrived at the inpatient addiction recovery center on Tower Hill Road in North Kingstown on April 19, 2021, to see that the hallway connecting two buildings had become a corridor of ash. The windows were busted, the walls were charred and the floors were obliterated.
The AdCare Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center had to bus 51 patients to temporary shelters — which was a difficult feat during the opioid epidemic.
AdCare Rhode Island knew it was vital to rebuild, but supply chain issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic caused several setbacks.
However, Horgan said those setbacks gave the organization a chance to rethink the missing hallway's purpose.
"I'm so happy to say that it turned into something good," she told 12 News.
Last month, AdCare Rhode Island finally broke ground on the new structure, which will not only connect two buildings but also create space for 18 additional beds, so more patients can get the help they need.
"One of the walls that faces where the sun rises is all glass," Horgan enthused. "So patients are going to be able to sit in there for morning meditation group, watch the sunrise, and we'll have yoga in there."
Construction is expected to wrap up by the end of the year, and AdCare Rhode Island hopes to be able to welcome more patients starting in 2025.
"I'm really, really happy it's all working out," Horgan said. "We get to serve the community and the patients in the state and just help more individuals who need it."
