EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As the dog days of summer kick in, health experts are urging Rhode Islanders to take protective steps against skin cancer.
Along with wearing sunscreen and seeking shade, getting a skin cancer screening is one of the most important steps people can take. That's why the R.I. Department of Health is once again teaming up with Brown Dermatology to offer skin checks.
Starting Friday, screenings will be available for free at beaches across R.I. through mid-August.
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their lifetime, according to Brown Dermatology's John C. Kawaoka, MD.
"Everyone is at risk," Kawaoka said.
No matter how much time you're spending under the sun, health officials say prevention and early detection are the two ways to stay safe.
Preventative measures include applying sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible.
Early detection involves monitoring skin spots and moles over time and getting screened regularly.
"Getting a skin check is the most important thing you can do to protect against skin cancer," R.I. Health Director Jerry Larkin, MD, said in a press release.
"Skin cancer can affect people of all skin tones and complexions, which is why all Rhode Islanders should take advantage of these free, convenient skin cancer checks," Larkin continued. "Cancer screenings have the power to save lives."
The first 100 people to show up at each of the upcoming events will receive a screening, which will be done in private. Those in need of a follow-up will be given a referral for a further dermatology consultation.
Attendees are asked to wear swimsuits or clothing that can easily be removed.
