PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is urging boaters to be responsible and not operate their boats while under the influence of alcohol or drugs over the holiday.

The DEM, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, will be conducting increased patrols from Wednesday through Saturday as part of an annual campaign to prevent impaired boating.

"The tragedies that happen on our waterways because individuals choose to boat while impaired are totally preventable," Deputy Chief Michael Schipritt of the DEM's Division of Law Enforcement said. "As law enforcement, it is our job to do everything we can to ensure the safety of recreational boaters and paddlers."

Boaters should also be aware of the latest boating safety regulations, which may result in tickets if not followed.

Visit the DEM's website to learn more about boating safety.
