NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) -- Special Olympics Rhode Island (SORI) started their annual Torch Run Super Plunge Saturday afternoon with the goal of raising money and awareness for the organization.
Last year, SORI received over $140,000 and hope to set a record this time around for fundraising and raise $1 million.
During the event, a team of 17 participants, which includes multiple police chiefs, run into the cold water at Salty Brine State Beach every hour throughout a 24-hour period.
Then on Sunday at noon, R.I. State Police academy recruits, SORI athletes and supporters will come together for the torch run, which the organization says will "bring the community together in a powerful, highly visual show of support."
