4 rescued from sinking boat after crash near Block Island

NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WPRI) — Four people were rescued Thursday night after two fishing boats crashed off the coast of Block Island, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound said it dispatched crews around 8:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision about 10 miles south of the island.

Six people aboard the 87-foot scalloper, Vanquish, reported no injuries or significant damage.

However, the 55-foot trawler, Mattie and Maren II, faced critical flooding, with its crew struggling to keep up with dewatering efforts as the engine room filled with water.

By 9:15 p.m., another Coast Guard crew arrived on scene to assist, but the USCG said worsening weather conditions, including 4- to 6-foot seas and 23 mph winds, made dewatering efforts unsuccessful.

All four crew members aboard the Mattie and Maren II were safely rescued and taken to Station Montauk, with no reported injuries. The Vanquish returned to its home port in New Bedford.

"The quick thinking and preparedness of the crew, including donning survival suits and readying emergency equipment, played a crucial role in their safe rescue despite challenging conditions," said Lt. Jonathan Roth, a Sector Long Island Sound command duty officer.

As the Mattie and Maren II remains adrift, a marine safety information broadcast has been issued.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
