CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The boating crash that hurt three people on Monday was caused by a wave hitting the vessel, causing it to capsize near the Charlestown Breachway.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) said one person was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. The other two people declined medical attention.

Charlestown Rescue, the Charlestown police and fire departments and the DEM Environmental Police all responded to the scene.

The boat was not entering or exiting the breachway at the time of the crash, according to the DEM.

The capsized vessel became lodged against the west wall of the breachway. The DEM said the boat will be retrieved by a private towing company.

The breachway was previously damaged in a number of winter storms. As a result, the water has been pulling sand in front of the breachway and into the channel, changing the depth and making the channel more narrow.

While the DEM says it believes the incident is unrelated to the damaged breachway, the agency still wants boaters to "maintain a safe distance from the mouth of the breachway while passing it."

Emergency repairs to the breachway started on Friday. The DEM estimates they will be done by Nov. 1.
