CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — This month, construction will start on six new restroom and shower facilities at Burlingame State Campground in Charlestown.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) said the new facilities will be modern, accessible, gender neutral, and have indoor and outdoor coin-operated showers.
The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase will remove and replace the outdated facilities in the Mills Camp, Midpark North and Fish Camp areas. The second phase will involve the facilities in the Main, Midpark South and Legiontown areas.
The facilities affected in the first phase of construction are now closed. The DEM expects the new showers and restrooms to be completed by spring 2026. The second phase of the project will begin next year, with a projected end date of April 2027.
The $18 million project is being funded primarily by the 2021 Beach, Clean Water, and Green Economy Bond and a $2 million federal grant.
The DEM said there will be some extra noise due to the construction and campers may be required to use facilities at different areas of the campground.
Campers with trips planned this year who want to change or cancel their reservations should contact Reserve America or call 1-877-742-2675.
