NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — The 2024 Rhode Island "Walk like MADD" event on Saturday is being held in honor of Katie DeCubellis.
DeCubellis was 13 years old when she was killed by a drunk driver in 1999. Her parents, Meg and John DeCubellis have been very outspoken since that day.
"It's just unimaginable the things we've missed out on as a family during those 25 years," John said.
The couple told 12 News Katie's birthday just passed and she would have been 38 — the same age Meg was when Katie was killed.
The DeCubellis' realized that if their daughter was still here, she'd be old enough to be a mother.
"Our children are both grown, gone to college, gotten married, there's just so many milestones," Meg said. "But every time there's a good milestone, it's almost a reminder of what should, you know, Katie should be with us and she's not, and what would her milestones be?
The walk is one MADD’s top fundraisers of the year. They hope to raise $35,000 to invest in raising awareness about making responsible decisions behind the wheel.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the North Beach Pavillion in Narragansett.
