NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — Anyone who wants to become a lifeguard in Rhode Island must become certified by the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and testing is just getting underway.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, the DEM will hold its first surf lifeguard certification testing at Scarborough North State Beach.
Non-surf lifeguard certification testing will begin on May 21 at Lincoln Woods State Park Beach from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
The DEM strongly recommends that all lifeguard candidates pre-register for a timeslot. Walk-in registrations will be accepted up to one hour prior to the last time slot, but candidates will have to wait for an open timeslot which is not guaranteed.
Candidates must bring a photo ID, documentation of lifeguard training, a CPR and first aid certificate and a completed lifeguard certification form. If applicable, candidates must bring their signed proof of endurance swim form.
Anyone younger than 18 must also bring a parent or legal guardian to sign the lifeguard certification form.
Those who successfully complete the test must pay a $10 fee for the state lifeguard certification.
Currently, the DEM has hired 65 lifeguards, but full-time positions are still available at all state swimming areas.
Lifeguards hired before June 28 can receive a one-time $500 sign-on bonus. Lifeguards who work for the DEM until Sept. 2 and remain in good standing may receive an additional $500 retention bonus.
