NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WPRI) — A number of boaters spotted a dead humpback whale floating in Rhode Island waters over the long weekend.
Mystic Aquarium's Sarah Callan said the Animal Rescue Program began receiving reports of a whale off the coast of Fisher's Island on Saturday. The whale was seen again near Block Island on Monday.
Callan said as of Tuesday, her team hasn't been able to track the whale down.
"The winds and current have been a bit shifty," Callan said. "A first responder looked for it by boat for over an hour [Monday] and wasn't able to find it."
Callan's team was going to try and tow the whale somewhere remote to perform a necropsy, but there haven't been any new reports of its location.
Anyone who spots this whale or notices other marine mammals that appear to be in distress can call Mystic Aquarium's 24-hour hotline at (860) 572-5955 ext. 107.
