NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Islanders are heading home after spending their Labor Day weekend outside the state.

"I had an amazing weekend," Wanda Brown, who headed to Washington D.C. for a conference, told 12 News. "Glad to be home, though."

Brown said her traveling to and from D.C. were smooth, but there were a lot of people at the airport.

In late August, the Transportation Security Administration said this year's holiday weekend was "expected to be the busiest Labor Day travel period" on record.

Other people, which included out-of-state visitors, also decided to head to Scarborough State Beach.

"This is great access for the beach as opposed to the Cape for us, which has a lot more traffic," Deb Henderson of Grafton, Massachusetts, said. "It's beautiful there, but just a lot of traffic."

According to AAA, one of the best times for those who traveled to head home and beat the traffic will be Tuesday after 1 p.m.

Rhode Island's Department of Environmental Management also issued a reminder that Monday is the last day state beaches will be staffed with lifeguards and have its facilities open.
