SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Summer might be winding down but mosquitoes are still out until the first hard frost.
The R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM) will spray the Great Swamp area in South Kingstown and the Chapman Swamp in Westerly on Thursday and Friday due to the threat of the deadly mosquito-borne viruses.
The helicopter will drop the pellets between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and will not target open bodies of water. The DEM added that the spray does not pose a risk to humans or the environment.
Earlier this month, an Oxford man in his 80s tested positive for EEE. It was the first human case in the state since 2020.
Several cases of West Nile Virus have also been reported, including two more announced in Massachusetts on Tuesday.
The best way to keep from getting bit by a mosquito is to avoid being out from dusk to dawn or wearing long sleeves and pants.
