NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WPRI) — Sunday marked one year since the fire that destroyed a historic Block Island hotel.
The Harborside Inn has been demolished after it was deemed a total loss due to heavy damage from the fire that started the night of Aug. 18, 2023.
Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen of the Harbor Grill on the second level. While the exact cause of the fire is still unclear, the fire marshal’s report identified some factors that allowed the flames to quickly spread, namely a buildup of grease in the cooking area.
The investigation into the fire continues, but the owner has plans to rebuild. A proposal was brought to the Historical District Commission on Monday for final approval.
Block Island's Town Manager said they have also been working to build a new public safety complex, but it's still in the early stages.
Crews from all over the state had to be ferried in with loads of equipment to get the fire under control. Since then, the town got a new fire engine they ordered before that night, but they plan to keep the old ladder truck as a backup.
There is also a ballot question in November authorizing the expenditure of up to a $1 million bond. The funding would allow the town to purchase a portable saltwater pumper and a vehicle to move the mobile device as well as a significant amount of hose line which would help their limited water supply.
A vote by the Historical District Commission for final approval is expected to take place next week.
