NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — Monday isn't exactly a prime beach day due to the rainy forecast. But anyone who's planning to go check out the big waves being kicked up by Hurricane Ernesto should do so with caution.
As the storm passes by in the Atlantic, it's causing dangerous surf conditions near the coast. That means rip currents are a threat to those going in the ocean to swim or surf.
Rip currents occur when large waves crash onto the beach, then the water recedes with a force strong enough to pull even the strongest swimmer out to sea.
If you're in the water and get caught in a rip current, don't try to fight it. Instead, swim parallel to the coastline until you're able to turn back toward shore.
If you're just planning to watch the waves from the shore, make sure you're doing so from a safe location. Stay off the rocks and jetties, since they can become slick, and large waves can sweep you into the water.
