WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — The Westerly-Pawcatuck branch of the Ocean Community YMCA is getting $700,000 in federal earmarks to improve programming and community spaces.
Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse along with Congressman Seth Magaziner helped secure the funding.
Reed's office says the money will be supporting a second phase of renovations. The first phase included changes to the facility's welcome center, new flooring and improvements to the gymnastics area, wellness and child watch centers.
The second phase will include upgrades to the community room, kitchen, makers space and co-worker space. New areas will also be created for modern programming like E-sports.
The Ocean Community Y serves about 10,000 members across its three branches in Southwestern Rhode Island. About 20% of its members receive financial assistance, helping those who can't afford a membership to still benefit from its programs and services.
