LEBANON, N.H. (WPRI) — A Hopkinton man accused of exchanging gunfire with Vermont state troopers is now in police custody.
Nearly a month ago, 30-year-old Brenden Sackal allegedly led officers on a chase throughout several northeastern states before hitting two Vermont State Police cruisers with his truck. Police said he then started shooting at the troopers, who returned fire.
Since then, Sackal has been receiving treatment at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire for gunshot wounds he sustained during the July 14 shootout.
On Monday, N.H. State Police arrested Sackal on a fugitive from justice warrant based on charges stemming from the incident, which include attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and multiple counts of attempted aggravated murder.
Once discharged from the hospital, he was transported to the Grafton County Jail the next day.
According to police, Sackal has an extensive criminal history dating back a decade. Since moving to Hopkinton three years ago, police said they have had more than 30 interactions with him.
Sackal was arraigned Wednesday on the fugitive charge in New Hampshire and waived extradition to Vermont.
Later that day, he was held without bail in Vermont and is set to appear in superior court for an 11 a.m. arraignment on Thursday.
Sackal will also face charges out of Hopkinton. The R.I. Attorney General's Office has not yet determined when he'll be extradited to Rhode Island.
